When preparing an article derived from a graduate dissertation, academic directors invariably state: "Ensure the journal is indexed in Q1 or Q2". But what is a journal quartile, and how is it computed across indexing databases?
Understanding the 4 Impact Quartiles
If we rank all indexed journals within a specific discipline (e.g., "Education" or "Computer Science") by their citation impact metric (SJR in Scopus or JIF in Clarivate Web of Science) and split the ranked list into four equal quartiles of 25% each:
- Q1: The top 25% globally recognized journals with highest citation metrics.
- Q2: The upper-middle 25% displaying strong international reach.
- Q3: The lower-middle 25%, optimal for master's thesis publications.
- Q4: The baseline 25% indexed venues, excellent for early-career researchers learning peer review.
